Description
Preheat
the oven to 375 F. Grease a deep sided spring form pan. Make
the dough using the first set of ingredients. Put the dough
in the buttered spring form making sure that it is pushed
high onto the sides as well.
Peal the
apples and slice into Quarters, then slice the quarters in
half so that you have eighths. It is most important that the
slices stay whole, not pieces. Arrange them in the dough,
standing upright, first all around the side and then the next
row inside, continuing until the entire pan is filled with
apple slices standing up. It will look something like a chrysanthemum.
Melt the butter in a small pan and add the sugar and almond
slices (a bit of cinnamon is nice too. Drizzle this mixture
over the entire apple cake and bake in the oven for 1 hour.
Remove from oven and allow to cool, slightly, remove the sides
of the spring form.
You may
make whipped cream to serve on top of the cake, however I
have never found it necessary, it is wonderful as it is. We
usually have it with a fresh pot of coffee on a cold afternoon.
